Speakers:

Fred Hempel, LADC
B.A. St. Cloud State University, A.S. in Chemical Dependency, Fred has been working in the field of chemical dependency for well over 10 years. He has provided clinical chemical dependency services to a wide range of patients throughout the metro. Fred is an analytical chemical dependency assessor with literally 100s of assessments that have been reviewed and utilized in many legal settings. Always a positive counselor he has provided one on one counseling as well as private treatment placement to many clients referred to him by local lawyers. Fred has testified in Court and has been successful in convincing courts to try individually crafted treatment options in civil commitment proceedings.

Jason VanDerscoff, CEO Five Stars Recovery Center
Graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in biology. He also has experience in finance, economics, and business. Prior to working in the field of chemical dependency, Jason was a licensed financial planner working with securities and insurance. He has twelve years of experience in the field of chemical dependency at Five Stars Recovery Center, and has helped thousands of addicted individuals. His dedication to helping people with addiction issues shows in his drive for ever improving services.

Tom Winegarden, MD
Dr. Winegarden is a Board Certified Adult and Addictions Psychiatrist. He is a Distinguished Diplomat Fellow of the Psychiatric Medical Society. He received his BA degree from St. Olaf College, Master of Divinity degree from Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary. He received his Medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed psychiatric residency training and Chemical Dependency Fellowship Training at the University of Minnesota. He is currently Medical Director of Stone Creek Psychiatry and Bridges at Stone Creek, Intensive Outpatient Program located in Chanhassen, MN. Dr. Winegarden has served previously as a consulting Psychiatrist at Hazelden Treatment Center, Center City, MN for 15 years and currently serves as staff Psychiatrist at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN. He is Medical Director of NorthStar Regional Dual Diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Program in Chanhassen, MN and Medical Director of Five Stars Residential Dual-Diagnosis Treatment Center in Chaska, MN. His clinical interests include Dual Diagnosis, depression, anxiety disorders, and attention deficit disorder.

Ashley Schultz, Steele County DOC
Ashley an oldest child of three boys, raised by his grandparents. He attributes his career path to the influence of his three probation officers when he was placed on probation while in high school. Ashley claims these probation officers acted as the “directors” of his life. Prior to being sentenced, Mr. Schultz had months of sobriety (cocaine addiction). A skilled electrician his life took a turn when he was involved in a catastrophic car accident. While recovering from the accident, Ashley went to Mankatoo State University and obtained a degree fin corrections. He has worked for Blue Earth County Drug Court conducting night checks of participants, and has been employed by the MN DOC in seven counties for the past seven years working with high risk felons and sex offenders. Ashley’s philosophy is to protect the public by helping the offender through empowering them to participate in their own case plan while his office holds them accountable to achieve their goals while focused on community safety.
