MSBA Releases 2011 SAGE Report: Self-Audit for Gender Equity and Diversity

The 2011 SAGE Report is intended to provide the legal community with updated information regarding demographic and cultural aspects of legal employment and the perception and experience of attorneys regarding bias. The Report was presented to the MSBA Assembly in September. In late 2010, the MSBA appointed a Diversity Survey Update Committee, a joint committee of the standing Women in the Legal Profession and Diversity Committees, to conduct an update of the 2006 SAGE Report: Self-Audit for Gender Equity and Diversity.

The Committee distributed an online employer survey to all Minnesota law firms and other legal employers (such as law schools, legal aid offices, etc.) with ten or more attorneys. Forty-two law firms and 15 non-firm legal employers responded to the employer survey. A survey for individual attorneys was sent via email to MSBA members and to the presidents of the minority bar associations, with a request they forward it in turn to their members. A total of 1,101 attorneys completed the individual survey. The employer and individual surveys included questions regarding gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability and religion. Ten focus groups were also conducted, with 51 lawyers participating.

Stay tuned for more details regarding a CLE program that will discuss the 2011 Report in more detail.
