Register now for the April 17 Civil Trial Certification Exam

Fewer than 3% of all licensed attorneys in Minnesota are Certified Specialists. Now is your chance to join this select group. The MSBA is currently accepting applications for the Civil Trial Law and Criminal Law Certification examinations.

The Certified Civil Trial Specialist exam will be on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The four hour exam format will be giving fact patterns followed by multiple choice, yes/no, true/false, sustained/overruled and cite the rule type questions in Civil Procedure, Evidence and Ethics. The exam registration deadline is March 26.

The first ever exam offered by the MSBA to become a Certified Criminal Law Specialist will be on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The three hour exam will consist of multiple choice and short answer. The exam registration deadline is April 14, 2010.

Although there are many attorney ratings systems, only certain lawyers may use the designation “Specialist”. These lawyers have been certified by a Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification accredited agency. Since 1988, attorneys in two areas have established the objective qualifications that define a “MSBA Certified Specialist” and have overseen certifying agencies in their specialties. MSBA Legal Specialist Certification is proud to announce that the MBLC has also approved the Standards for certifying attorneys in Labor and Employment Law. The Labor and Employment Specialist program will begin accepting application this summer and is planning an October 2 exam.

Remember that Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company (MLM), with the approval and support of the Minnesota Board of Legal Certification, has created the Specialty Certification Credit program. For Minnesota attorneys only, MLM will offer a 5% credit on professional liability insurance to attorneys that are certified.
