CAIR-MN Honored for Pro Bono Work

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Minnesota (CAIR-MN) on October 4 was honored with one of the American Bar Association Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division 2013 Difference Makers Awards for “making a difference through pro bono work.”

CAIR-MN, a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to Muslims and other racial and religious minorities in Minnesota, was honored for its work as the state’s only Muslim civil rights and legal advocacy organization.

“CAIR-MN is an organization committed to ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and dignity,” said Judge Jennifer A. Rymell, ABA GPSolo chair. “We are honored to present CAIR-MN with this award.”

Led by civil rights director Saly Abd Alla and civil rights attorney Ellen Longfellow, CAIR-MN handled nearly 180 cases in 2012—including cases involving employment discrimination, hostile work environments, denial of religious accommodations, school bullying and harassment, land-use opposition, hate crimes and vandalism, racial and religious profiling and extrajudicial exile. The award was presented during the Difference Makers Awards program at GPSolo’s 2013 fall meeting and National Solo & Small Firm Conference in Lexington, Kentucky.
