MSBA Offers Two Certification Programs Labor and Employment Law and Criminal Law practitioners may now qualify for certification following approval of two new programs by the State Board of Legal Certification. The programs mark the first new MSBA certification programs in more than 20 years. The MSBA Assembly reviewed initial program proposals from the MSBA Labor & Employment Law Section and Criminal Law Section in 2009, authorizing the sections to petition the state board for approval. Watch for more details about the two programs, and note the following dates: Criminal Law Certification: Application deadline of April 14, 2010 and exam date of Saturday, April 24, 2010. Applicants will complete the entire application after they have passed the exam. Labor and Employment Law Certification: Application deadline of September 7, 2010 and exam date of Saturday, October 2, 2010.
Through testing, peer review from lawyers and judges, and documenting experience, the MSBA Legal Specialist Certification Program measures a lawyer's expertise in the specialty area. Although many lawyers limit their practice areas, only lawyers who successfully complete the application process and continue to meet all program standards may call themselves MSBA Board Certified Specialists. The Certified Specialist designation is one way for the public to identify those attorneys who have demonstrated proficiency in their specialty area and to find an attorney whose qualifications match their legal needs. The goal of MSBA certification programs is to assist the public by identifying attorneys who meet objective specialty area standards for reliable knowledge and experience. The
