Immigration Consequences of Criminal Charges - What to Keep in Mind When Representing Non-Citizens

The first part of this two-hour CLE will offer presentations by the panel of three experts, followed by a Q & A and sharing of "tips." Sheila Stulman, immigration attorney, will present on "Matter of Mohamed" and "safe" pleas or settlements related to criminal charges. Dan Homstad, a criminal law practitioner, will present on the law related to DWIs, and attorney Bruce Nestor, who practices both criminal defense and immigration, will present on Post-Conviction Relief. The Q & A portion of the event will be moderated by Max Keller, Chair of the Criminal Law Section, and M. Graciela Gonzalez, a criminal defense and immigration attorney, and a member of the Immigration Law Council.

Dan Homstad | Dan Homstad Defense
Dan is a Minnesota State Bar Association board certified criminal law specialist. He began as a staff attorney at the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office where he represented indigent defendants charged with the most serious crimes including homicide, sexual assault, child pornography, and economic crimes. Dan then moved to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, he was assigned to major felony divisions where he continued to litigate serious criminal trials and issues. Dan was lead counsel in over 150 jury trials and 200 bench trials during his career as a prosecutor and public defender.

Sheila Stuhlman | Stuhlman Law
Sheila Stuhlman specializes in removal (deportation) defense and has practiced immigration law exclusively for 14 years. Prior to opening her own law office in January she served as the Program Director at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, responsible for providing supervision to staff attorneys and interns, as well as technical assistance, outreach, training and representation in immigration matters, and served as the Immigration Consultant for the Minnesota State Board of Public Defense for 4 ½ years. She currently serves as the immigration consultant for the Office of the Hennepin County Public Defender. Sheila is a 2000 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School and admitted to practice before Minnesota state and federal courts, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Bruce Nestor is a criminal defense, immigration and civil rights attorney in Minneapolis, MN. Bruce is the past President of the National Lawyers Guild (2000-2003), a national bar association of progressive attorneys, law students, and legal workers, founded in 1937 as the first racially integrated bar association in the United States. He is a member of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, and a member of the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was counsel in State v.
