This presentation will include an overview of exempt organization tax law with a deeper look at more advanced topics like unrelated business income, related organization considerations and transfer pricing. In particular, exempt organizations which have related for-profit entities or unrelated business income activities should attend this presentation to understand how unrelated business income can be impacted by allocation methodologies.

Tax Law Section meeting will be held immediately following the CLE program at 3PM. All Section members are welcome to attend.

Presenters:

Kim Hunwardsen | Tax Partner & Leader of Exempt Organization Tax Practice at Eide Bailly LLP

Kim leads Eide Bailly’s Exempt Organization Tax Practice. During her 23 years serving nonprofit and health care organizations, Kim has developed an extensive understanding of the issues affecting tax-exempt organizations. She works with clients to ensure compliance with the various tax regulations and reporting requirements. In addition she consults with clients on issues such as entity formation, unrelated business income, compensation and benefits, mergers and restructurings and IRS examinations. Kim consults with healthcare organizations on compliance with 501(r) requirements and conducts Community Health Needs Assessments. In addition, Kim speaks regularly to nonprofit and health care groups throughout the country on issues related to their tax-exempt status. Kim serves as President of the Board of Directors at a nonprofit organization and uses this experience to provide perspective on issues of importance to boards. Kim is also based in Minneapolis, MN and holds the CPA designation.

Jason Fritts | International Tax Senior Manager & Leader of Transfer Pricing Practice at Eide Bailly LLP 

Jason leads Eide Bailly’s Transfer Pricing Practice. Jason has more than 13 years of domestic and international transfer pricing experience, including assisting tax-exempt organizations with related-party cost allocations, unrelated business income, and tax authority defense. Additionally, Jason assists his clients with planning and documenting intercompany transfers of tangibles, intangibles, services, and capital. He has performed numerous cost allocation studies assisting clients in complying with the U.S. transfer pricing services regulations while supporting tax-effective strategies. Jason serves on the board of Laura Jeffrey Academy, a non-profit tuition-free charter school in St. Paul, MN offering STEM educational experiences. Jason is based in Minneapolis, MN.
