Military and Veterans Affairs Section Annual Meeting and CLE

Veterans face difficulties in the legal system everyday.  Join us for this half-day seminar to learn about some of the particular issues encountered by veterans as they navigate the courts. 

The Military & Veterans Affairs Section Annual Meeting & Elections will be held from 12:45-1:45 pm.  Lunch will be provided for this segment and all section members are invited to attend.

CLE Schedule:

1:45 pm – Registration

2:00 pm – Ethical Issues for Pro Bono Representation - 1.0 Ethics CLE Credit
The Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct relevant to pro bono work will be explained and examined.  The applicable rules to be covered include Rule 6.1, 1.2(c), 1.1, 1.14, 3.1, 4.4, and 1.4, MRPC.  Other topics to be covered during the CLE include limiting the scope of representation, informed consent, ghost writing, and termination of the attorney-client relationship.  Case law and hypothetical examples will be used as the basis for discussion.

3:00 pm – Minnesota Uniform Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act
Two experts in family and military law, Victoria Taylor and Lyndsey Olson, provide an overview of the major provisions of Minnesota's new Uniform Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act, addressing the varying issues affecting deployed parents and military children in custody and visitation proceedings.

4:00 pm - Servicemembers in the Courtroom:  Views from the Bench
Three Minnesota district judges who have presided over the veterans' courts in their respective counties will discuss the role of the veteran's court as a problem-solving court and review the successes and challenges that have been seen. Also discussed will be the role of court mentors and  the unique aspects of veterans that make them successful in the vet's court, along with do's and don't for counsel in representing these clients.
