Dilemmas and Challenges in Workplace Investigations

Whether conducting an investigation or advising someone else who is, it is important to recognize the various challenges an investigator may face when things don’t go as planned or when expectations vary. In this panel discussion, three seasoned workplace investigators will discuss some recurrent issues that arise during workplace investigations – confidentiality, union involvement, compromised neutrality and more.

Presenters:

Fran Sepler is President of Sepler & Associates based in Minneapolis. She is recognized for her pioneering approach to workplace factfinding, which she teaches in investigative seminars throughout the United States.  She has conducted over 400 neutral fact findings over nearly thirty years, and is the author of the book “Finding the Facts: What Every Workplace Investigator Needs to Know” (Ventana, 2008.)  She most recently taught a semester long master’s level class at the University of Minnesota entitled “Workplace Fairness,” and is currently working on an organizational assessment tool entitled “the Fairness Quotient.”

Jeff Johnson is President and Founder of Midwest Employment Resources, a firm providing employment law training and investigation services to businesses throughout the country.  He has previously served as an attorney with Cargill, Inc. and with firms in Minneapolis and Chicago.  Jeff is also a Hennepin County Commissioner and was the Republican candidate for Minnesota governor in 2014.  He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and Georgetown Law School in Washington, D.C.  Jeff and his wife, Sondi, live in Plymouth, Minnesota, with their two sons, Thor and Rolf.
