few ways that men can preserve their rights to these children. Lucas

She will provide an overview of the tangled web regarding unmarried father’s
rights.
Employment Law: Current

Tiffany will present updates on two new
labor law cases, one decided and one currently pending, before the United States
Supreme Court. Both cases have the potential to change the complexion of labor
relations and collective bargaining. She will also discuss future
projections for organized labor in workplaces.
Criminal Law:
Expungements and Ban-the-Box Legislation - Anthony Bushnell
Significant
changes have come to Minnesota regarding both what you can ask a job applicant
about a criminal record and what you can find access to in background checks. At
the same time, many people systematically shut out of the job market by past
convictions suddenly have a chance at a clean slate. Mr. Bushnell will give a
brief overview of the "Ban the Box" legislation that prohibits asking about past
crimes on initial job applications and the Second Chance Expungement Act
that will now allow many people to seal all state and local records of a wide
variety of criminal convictions.
Animal Law: What You Should Know About Animal Law in Minnesota
- Kortney Nordrum
A
legislative update and quick primer on the basics of Animal Law in Minnesota.
Topics covered will be what you should know about animal law in Minnesota, the
status of animals in the courts, and the current Breeder Bill before the MN
legislature (the Puppy Mill Bill).
Estate Law: Changes in Minnesota Estate Tax Threshold and
Gifting - Sheila Kelly
Wondering what’s new with the Minnesota estate and
gift taxes? It was a surprise to just about everyone when Minnesota enacted the
gift tax last year and it was just as surprising when they repealed it this
year! Sheila Kelly, Attorney at Law will review the changes enacted
this year in both the Minnesota gift and estate taxes and how it may affect your
practice.
Appellate Practice: Big Changes to the Minnesota Appellate
Rules - Karen Cole
Minnesota's appellate rules have been amended,
effective July 1, 2014. The changes accompany the digitization of district
court and appellate files. Practitioners will eventually be submitting
their appellate papers electronically. Some familiar standbys of appellate
practice -- like the appendix -- will be eliminated. Karen will explain
the changes and how practitioners can best use them.
