Many disparate devices can currently interact, and that intelligent
interconnectivity will expand to many more previously “dumb” devices. For
example, Internet-enabled thermostats and smoke detectors can currently work
together to regulate whole-house temperature and to Tweet users which room may
be on fire. Cloud-based services
like If This Then That (IFTTT) can work with intelligent devices to greet
homeowners by automatically unlocking doors. Many of these devices have the potential
to be hacked or to malfunction, so they will need periodic software updates to
address new defects and security concerns.
Notably, some devices with undisclosed connectivity are feeding data to
third parties, like a car manufacturer, an insurance company, or the
government. A litigator and a professor will discuss the
potential legal implications of the ever-expanding Internet of
Things.
