Tax Issues for Low Income and Undocumented Immigrants

The Tax Law Section and the Immigration Law Section will be hosting a joint CLE covering tax law issues specific to low income and undocumented immigrants. This CLE will cover a number of issues on this topic, including: the process of applying for an ITIN, risks and benefits of filing a tax return if you are undocumented, filing tax returns as proof of residency and good moral character in immigration filings and any provisions in the tax laws and tax code that apply differently to undocumented immigrants.

Lunch will be provided.

Presenters:

Mathias Simon | Minnesota Department of Revenue

Mathias has been with the Minnesota Department of Revenue for 5 years. He started out on the phones answering taxpayer and preparer questions about Minnesota Individual Income Tax in English and Spanish. Mathias currently works as one of the Outreach Coordinators to provide Tax Education - providing information in Spanish, Somali, and Hmong as well. His group also helps provide free tax preparation services through the VITA program.

Thomas Larson | Prepare + Prosper

Tom joined the Prepare and Prosper team in 2006. As the Self-employment Program Coordinator, Tom provides tax preparation and related services to entrepreneurs who range from performing artists to construction workers to day care providers. Tom has been involved on national task forces helping write curriculum and certification tests for Schedule C tax volunteers. Tom has worked extensively with the Latino community in employment services, adult education (ESL and citizenship) and tax services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education and Spanish from St. Cloud State University and taught Spanish at Century College for 7 years.
